LYNMOUTH & HIDDEN EXMOOR
2 HRS
1/2
By sea the pretty fishing village of Lynmouth lies 12 miles to the east of our home port of Ilfracombe, a much less arduous journey than the 19 miles by country roads and one where you will witness not only one of the natural wonders of the southwest but also one of the greatest sights in the whole of the British Isles. Without doubt there is nowhere on the English mainland as mysterious and as remote as the stretch of coast known as the Hidden Edge of Exmoor.
Unlike land locked Bodmin and Dartmoor the Bristol Channel slices through some of the highest peaks on Exmoor to create the tallest sea cliff in England and a coastline mostly inaccessible from land, and on many days of the year by boat also.
Witness with us the extraordinary rock formations, tiny coves, hanging valleys and waterfalls, including the 200 metre Hollow Brook waterfall one of the highest coastal waterfalls in the UK.
Just before the isolated cove of Heddons Mouth is Elwill Bay and home to a small colony of Atlantic Grey Seals who live amongst the stunning Trentishoe Bluffs. Hopefully, we will be in luck and see one or two hauled out or busy fishing in the clear waters.
Past Highveer Point to the East of Heddons Mouth is the run down towards the idyllic Woody Bay with remains of a Victorian pier built to welcome paddle steamers plying the Bristol Channel. From there its Lee Abbey and its namesake cove and then on to the world famous Valley of the Rocks which looks even more spectacular from the sea.
At many spots along this section, we will find colonies of sea birds safely living on the inaccessible sheer cliff faces, away from predators and disturbance. Auks in particular are present in number with Guillemots and Razorbills both on the cliffs and in social 'rafts' on the water.
Finally, we arrive in Lynmouth with its iconic water powered cliff railway carrying passengers the 500 feet to Lynton above and spectacular views across the bay and to Wales in the distance. One for a future visit without doubt.
Depending on tide we will venture in towards the little harbour to give another perspective of the pretty village where the East and West Lyn river valleys meet.
For the return trip we head offshore to view Exmoor from afar and what sits above the coastal features explored on the outward leg.
All in all a great trip and certainly one which will be remembered!
"We had a great morning on this family run charter along the coast spotting hidden coves , caves and the small villages dotted along the way. Dave and Becky skipper the boat with their son taking the bookings on the quay ( he has just got his licence too well done ! ). The knowledge of the area is first class as Dave is also in the RNLI and supporting this small family business is in our opinion so much better than the large boats as the interaction , questions and answers were so personal that you felt part of the family. We highly recommend this charter whether it is a trip up the coastline , wildlife spotting , sunset cruise or a day trip to Lundy you are guaranteed a very professional personal service that we do not think could be matched locally. We wish them every success and would certainly use them again when in North Devon."
